Macouba: Things to visit

Macouba: Things to visit

Temps de lecture : < 1 minute
Macouba is a small village in the extreme north of Martinique, erected on top of a cliff and facing the Atlantic Ocean. The name of the village comes from a small fish that was once widespread in the region. The small village is rich in history and heritage. During the 17th and 19th century, several sugar houses were built. At the end of the 17th century, the “habitation fond-préville” is located on the banks of the Roche River, it was used as a sugar factory. In 1845, Mr. Jean-Marie Martin bought the house and transformed it into a distillery. Since November 1996, the agricultural rums of Martinique, including Rhums JM, have obtained the Martinique Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC). You can visit the Fonds-Préville distillery to discover all the secrets of rum making. Today, Macouba is known for its rum, but also for its Nord-Plage district. Nord-Plage is a historical district on the North Atlantic coast of Martinique. The neighborhood was the subject of a film in 2004. There is a small group of abandoned houses on the seafront. What are you waiting for to discover the small town of Macouba, which is a mix between originality, relaxation and cultural richness.
